15 November 2023-- five free mac tools that help you make life easier --

Tiles

home page ->

Tiles is a completely free window manager which can help layout app window by simply drag window to the edge or corner instead of using the original window layout choice by Apple (pressing option, then hovering in the zoom bottom of the window and finally layout the window to left or right half). It's a tool with minimized function, no other fancy functions, easy to use, exact the tool type I like.

There are also some other tools that do the same thing on the market. I only tried Tiles and currently not planning to switch to another as it can meet my window manage needs perfectly. Below are those tools if you are interested:

Magnet (paid)

Swish (paid)

Rectangle (free)

Amethyst (free)

Scroll Reverser

Have you ever been annoyed by using an external mouse in mac? I have, and the main reason is that the direction between rolling wheel and page's scrolling are reverse when compared to normal use cases. While the scroll reverser just normalize it. It's free and open source, and also the kind of simple tool application I like.

Better Display

home page ->

Better Display is one of the best screen monitor manage tools I have used, especial for occasions when your Mac is connected to an external monitor. It can help you adjust screen resolution, refresh rate, brightness and some high level screen settings without wondering aimlessly in the system setting. And of course, it's free and open source.

Hidden Bar

home page ->

How many icons are there in your menu bar? For me, there are a lot. And most of they are tools that I only have to make sure it's running normally on the backend(tiles and scroll reverser are tools falling into this category). Most times, there is no reason that I would click those icon. So the better way is to hide them, right? And Hidden Bar help you do it.

To be frank, Bartender is better when dealing with the notch on the Mac screen as it can show hidden icons beneath the menu bar. But Bartender need payment while Hidden Bar is free, and usually I would use my Mac with a secondary screen, so this issue can be avoided.

Endel

home page ->

Endel is a pomodoro timer app that can help you stay focused. What make it distinct from other pomodoro apps is that it can generate soundscape by using artificial intelligence, and it can help you relax or stay focus more easily. The basic function of endel is free to use, but it also contains pro functional that need payment to unlock. Moreover, it supports multiple devices, including Apple Watch.
